How to Take Recreations
Updated November 10, 2020
Have you ever wanted to take then-and-now photos while out and about the city? Well, now you can!
Urban Archive “recreations” are one of our signature features available to iOS users. If you don’t yet have our app, you can download it here.
Find Your “Then” Image
Use the map to find nearby historic sites with images you’d like to recreate on Urban Archive.
You’ll need to use the app while on location.
Open Camera
Tap the Camera Icon to open your phone’s camera through the Urban Archive App. A live camera view will open automatically.
If you haven’t already, allow the app permission to use your camera.
snap the shot
Position yourself to the best of your ability so that your framing matches the image. You can use the slider at the top of your screen while taking the shot to increase or decrease the historic image overlay.
Choose Layout
After you take the “now” photo, you can select a layout for your recreation at the bottom of the screen.
Drag and zoom into your photo until you’re happy with its placement.
Share and Save
Once you’re happy with your recreation, tap “Share” to post your image immediately, or tap “Save” to save the image to your camera roll.
We LOVE seeing your recreations! You can tag us on Instagram @urbanarchiveny or shoot us an email with your pics.
Happy recreating!
