As sunshine and humidity make their way back to the City, we are collecting photos that showcase the magic and madness of a New York summer.
Whether that’s a shot of your grandmother plunging into the water at the Rockaways, or a candid photo taken on a subway platform that felt like a sauna, we want summer memories from years past on Urban Archive. So dig into your archives and send us what you got!
Here are a few examples of what we’re looking for:
“These children are lined up for “The Whip,” a ride popularized on Coney Island by W. F. Mangels and later adapted to mobile versions that showed up, like ice cream trucks, on summer afternoons. The Whip’s cars move along an oval track, picking up speed and “whipping” around each curve.”
—Joseph Ditta
“Taken on August 2, 2002, shortly before the worst thunderstorm to hit NYC in 10 years. I was with a friend and we met a bunch of young men who were diving off the pier. The sun was setting and the storm hit about 30 minutes after this picture.“
